At Water Missions International, we know that there
is no "one-size-fits-all" answer to making
safe water available in developing countries.
The Living WaterT
Treatment System (LWTST) is often, but not always,
the best solution for providing a sustainable source
of safe water to a community. When other solutions
are called for, WMI's engineers have the flexibility,
knowledge, and experience to design and implement
the most appropriate technologies.
Examples of past Design & Consulting projects include capping a spring at an orphanage, well rehabilitation after Hurricane Katrina, and comprehensive water/wastewater systems.
Case Study: Hospital de Occidente, Santa Rosa de Copan, Honduras
Imagine supplying medical services in a 240-bed hospital at 150% occupancy with contaminated water that is available only two days per week. That was the situation at the Hospital de Occidente, one of six regional hospitals in Honduras.
Old and young patients alike suffered because the
water in the hospital was insufficient and unsafe.
The surrounding community also suffered from pollution
of the hospital's untreated wastewater.
In 2004, WMI undertook this project, which was funded by generous donations from individuals and a grant from the U.S. Agency for International Development. Key components of the project included:
Treating the existing water supply
Increasing the water supply by drilling a well
Providing a new water distribution system
Treating the wastewater
When the project
was completed, the patients and staff had a plentiful
supply of clean, safe water for the first time in
ten years!
"In the past we only had one or two gallons for patients to bathe, but now they are allowed to shower, which they enjoy very much. Also we can flush toilets. In the past there was no water to flush, and it becomes very unpleasant. There were procedures for operations that involved washing hands. In the past, these were ignored because there was no water. Now these can be re-implemented. Thank you to all the donors and volunteers who have made this possible."
